A Peek Behind The Curtain?
Joel Sherman breaks some new ground on the endless Santana rumors when he suggests in today's Post that it is Hal Steinbrenner and not Hank who is preventing the Yankees from completing the deal.
We haven't heard much at all about Hal, but we should remember that both Hank and Hal were supposed to take over for their father. The way Sherman has it, Hal is the guy in charge of the budget and he doesn't want to splurge on Santana at this point.
That's fine with me and if you look at the Yankees this offseason, they have tried to avoid throwing a lot of money around. When you add up the deals they have announced, (Pettitte, Posada, Rivera, A-Rod, Molina, Hawkins) they have added $7 million to the payroll from last season. Now, they will have to pay a lot more to Wang and Cano in arbitration, but it is also probably safe to assume that Clemens won't get a huge deal next May. That means that overall, spending should be down again in 2008. Subtract the $81 million coming off the books after 2008 and the Yankees are definitely heading in a different direction from the spending sprees of the past.

Peter,
You are assuming that we can simply subtract $81 million off the books next season and leave it at that. This presupposes that the Yankees aren't going to consider the "savings" as funds available to splurge on new "toys". I, for one, seriously doubt that the 2009 Yankees payroll is going to be $81 million less than it is now. BTW, have you seen the increases in ticket prices for 2008? Some have increased by 100%. Wow.

Good point, but I think the overall trend is to pay less.
The ticket thing is interesting. My tickets stayed the same in price but it looks like the top seats really got whacked. 2009 with the new stadium will be fascinating to watch pricing-wise.

Anytime the Yankees' payroll drops it's an accomplishment in itself. However, unless Miranda produces at AAA and then is successful during a call up then money is going to be thrown at Texeria. Plus their will be another open spot in the rotation unless Pettitte returns again.

Tripp-
I could definitely see Tex being on the radar for 2009, but I am not sure about what the Yankees will do with Pettitte. I could see Horne or Sanchez or Marquez or White penciled in the #5 spot in 2009 if the Big 3 lead the way this season.

Peter, you talk about the Yankees lowering payroll. Is that a good thing or a bad thing in your mind? You don't really give us your opinion on that other than saying it is a different direction for the Yankees.
Then again, you say it is fine with you if they don't splurge. Just why is that fine?

Texiera and Sabathia Next year if they don't win it all in 2008. They will make sure they go all the way in their new stadium in 2009.
