A Real Downer

Thanks to Greg for passing along a sad tale about Dwight Gooden.  If you didn't get to see Gooden in 1985, you missed one of the most amazing seasons ever by a pitcher.  I am glad to hear the the oft-maligned Gary Sheffield has tried to help his Uncle and has set some money aside for him, but it sounds like Dwight doesn't want to be helped.  I hope somehow, someway Gooden escapes the clutches of drugs and shows up at Shea Stadium this year to celebrate its final season.

interesting, on the way in to work this morning on the radio (sports talk, what else) they played an interview from yesterday they did with Pacman Jones.

One of the hosts got into it with Pacman about staying home, staying out of trouble and dumping the losers that drag you down once you become a celebrity.

Pacman, I am guessing much like Doc, much like Mike Vick, said something to the effect, "you didn't grow up like me, you had privileges, I shouldn't have to stay home to stay out of trouble"

He blamed people and the media for instigating all his troubles.

I mention this because in the Doc article you link to above, there is a sense Doc has never gotten rid of the friends that keep dragging him back into the downward cycle.

Tremendous talent, no doubt, somewhat wasted for sure.

I guess the only good thing about Dwight Gooden's story is that unlike Pacman he has only hurt himself.
