Who Were Those Guys?
Hold on a sec, was that Ian Kennedy looking like he belongs here? Was that Joe Girardi acting like Billy Martin? Was that Robinson Cano with a game-winning hit?
That win may or may not mean a thing when we look back on this season, but it is the type of win that could really spark a team.

A great game. Don't forget to acknowledge Matsui -- as always, he gets the critical hits and scores the critical runs.
We do really need to see more production out of Jeter and Giambi. Still too many dead spots in this order.

You're right - possibly a season defining moment. The whole team was lifted by that game. Ike looked GOOD. Cano was smiling big enough to hurt his face. Nice.

Ian finally got an umpire to give him the low strike and the corners, he will be fine he needs to get those pitches just like dice k and halladay get et. al. Girardi finally took one great step outside the torre mundane pathetic approch.Like I wrote early on Wheres billy ,oniel and the rest of the " all heart" gamers. cano finally took a few pitches, I know that was jeter telling him to do that in that at bat, He has been killing us for the last two years swinging at the first pitch ,thats were i so disappointed with girardi, order him to take a few in every at bat .i could see if the kid was hitting three hundred , but we wait for him to kill us before changing this impulse.same with giambi, he is a very selfish player, it is so obvious what he is doing, contract year, no way the yanks will sign this bum again, so instead of putting up batting avg. numbers, he knows the only shot he has is to put up homer #s , he must show he can still hit them out , but he is killing us in trying to build up for next negotiations, how can girardi NOT see this. he will not hit the ball to the left side in any situation. hes a disgrace.. and is an embarrassment. he was a potential H.O.F. guy . I celebrated when he came to us. N.Y stuck by this bum with all his HGH use. and he still wont be a team player. we have given this bum tens of millions. second highest player in B.B. he owes the yanks and the fans to be the great player he was with oakland. a few hits to left field and they will have to respect the whole field . waste of talent.. joe g. i wanted you to have that job as much as you .thats right ..Bing up giese and the other kids we have next year clean house..before this nonsense about thongs and giambi ,i said he belongs in venice beach .i didnt know how right i was , 24 mill, for a joke of a jock.

Danza, you are well off the mark here.
(1) Giambi's .230 average is hardly a smoking gun. Its exactly 4 hits from a .260 average which is his BA for the previous 3yrs.
(2) His OBP is .387, he is walking as much or more than ever.
(3) He is striking out LESS than ever (as a Yankee) at 7.25 PA per K.
Now you can say he should use all fields and it would make him a more dangerous hitter but its quite clear its not because he is swinging for the fences because it would be reflected in higher K's and lower BB's. Both of which he seems to have improved on. You say the motivation is a new contract and he is selfish. Obviously, even a cursory look at the statistics shows this to be off base.
Personally, I think Giambi's numbers will improve. He's putting the ball in play and he still being patient as ever [45th in pitches per PA]. I'm sure he'll struggle to hit .250+ this year but I bet his OBP remains close to .400 and he'll continue to work pitchers. As far as his play at 1B, to me, he's been a better 1B than Abreu has been a RF. If anyone is a DH its Abreu.
