Don't Look Now....
While the news is that Hideki Matsui is rejoining the team on Tuesday, I am more interested in a potential move for Saturday. The Yankees will need a starter then and heading into tonight there were two probable candidates. The first, Phil Hughes, did not pitch well tonight at Scranton. I think he gets another shot at AAA before the Yankees recall him.
The second guy is...wait for it...Carl Pavano who pitched very well in Trenton tonight. I know, he will probably get a paper cut tomorrow that ends his rehab, but he probably the guy who will get the call for Saturday. Think about that for a minute, how weird a year has this been? It will get stranger on Saturday if I am right.

If Pavano starts, I'm looking for 3 huge HRs with 10RBIs from A-Rod in the game. It would complete the Pavano/ A-Rod saga nicely. Now, THAT would be pretty darn weird.
Random thought: it would be great for Moose to finally get his 20 win season. He deserves it. He's had a pair of 19 win seasons and three 18 win ones, he needs to finally get a 20 win season. (Wonder what the winter holds for him.)

Good memory Mitchell, Pavano was on the mound for A-Rod's monster game.
I hope Moose gets his 20th, it would be nice to see. He has about 7-8 starts left, so there is a good shot.

"Oh what a month for Rodriguez on a Tuesday in the bronx!"
At this point, I think the prudent decision is to leave Hughes in AAA until he's totally ready. Let him make 1 or 2 more starts there and then lets see what Phil is really about down the stretch. It only makes sense to try and squeeze some value out of Carl in the meanwhile. Hell he might even win a game. Imagine that?

The last time Pavano pitched, he did very well. If I recall it was against Minnesota.
Yes, he's a total bust. But more disturbing is Hughes -- is he just a bunch of hype? If the Yanks had made the Hughes/Cabrera for Santana trade, they'd be laughing their way to a pennant. Just goes to show you why the Yanks have historically traded away unproven talent for expensive but proven vets.

It is still far too early to assess the Santana for Hughes-Kennedy-Cabrera trade.

Latest rumors:
Yankees want to sign Schilling, Maddux and possibly Smoltz, while re-signing Pettite and Mussina - all in an effort to get major endorsements from the AARP for the 2009 season. There are even rumblings of going after Randy Johnson if one of the above fails to sign. Uh, ah, sorry ... just starting thinking weird thoughts like that after reading something that Abraham wrote when he contemplated having Ponson and Pavano for the Sept callups.
