The Last Stand
I am not one of the many who believed the Yankees had to sweep Boston this series to stay in the playoff hunt. But, losing the series would eliminate them in my mind. So, I definitely count the next two games as "must wins" Yes, even if they do that, four games back with less than 30 to play is a lot to overcome, but it is possible.
One interesting thing to keep an eye on is Sunday. The 31st is the last day teams can trade players and put them on postseason rosters. I found this little nugget burried in the bottom of this article, the Yankees have not put any of their "significant" players through waivers yet. If they lose another game to Boston I would expect that to change. I will leave it at that for now until we see what happens on the field.

Yeah, and the Titanic could have been OK if they'd just ...
C'mon Peter. They don't have the (fill in the blank) to win it this year. You really expect them to make some miraculous trades/repairs to limp into October only to be blown out?
It's done, time to start talking about next year.
Just MHO, as the kids like to text.

I totally understand your thinking and I will probably join your opinion shortly, perhaps even later tonight.

Putrid. But never give up until the day of mathematical elimination.

Did we really think that Ponson was the second coming of Aaron Small? Nah ...
Last one to leave, please don't forget the lights, OK?

I think we need to turn the page, in a way, this HAS to happen for them to retool. Now that's its obvious that pretty drastic changes have to be made, management has the leverage to make the changes and players know they need to be made.
I still like A-rod to 1st, Jeter to 3rd. Damon in LF, Matsui DH, Nady in RF. Cano stays at 2B. Need a C (at the very least to back-up Posada), a SS, a CF (preferably a 2-3yr deal).
As I write that, the Yankees need a C, SS, CF. Truly is an end of an era, been close to 15yrs since you could say that.
Anyone want to take a crack at what the rotation will look like?

reading your posts above a thought came to mind. Imagine if you can (you young guys try hard) to a day before free agency...
Imagine the only way to improve your team from one year to the next is through rookies coming up (lots of talk in other posts about that and the young guns) and by trade.
Back in the day, the Yankees somehow acquired the best players, raised them through their system, and held on forever and won championships, championships, and more championships.
Obviously we will never go back to those days, free agency is forever...
but...imagine having to improve your lineup from this year without free agency...how would you package a trade or two?

Rotation will prob look like Wang, Joba, CC and possibly Sheets then who knows ... Hughes or Ike. Andy hasn't looked too dominant and Moose is defying gravity for now, but how much longer does he do so?
I also think they make a run at Texeira for 1B. Would Jeter be able/willing to play an OF position, I wonder ...

Heres the problem with that: Jeter's bat doesn't profile well at a corner outfield spot, or 1st base for that matter. The only logical move is to 3rd, where we have a solid 3rd basemen already. If you move Alex from 3rd to 1st, you lose a lot of his value, and you also block out the option of adding a big bat in the form of a new 1st basemen. In the end you'll end up adding a weak shortstops bat instead of a big bat at 1st. Jeter will be at short next year.
Id like to see them call up Miranda to play 1st and Jackson to man center for the final month. The current occupants do not figure into the long term plans anyway. Might as well give the fans something to watch if they arent going to compete.

Ian, agree completely that Jeter can't go to the corner OF. CF is a bit of a stretch ability-wise and Jackson is coming. If you deal Cano 2B isn't out of the question but I don't want to deal Cano. Good point on A-rod to 1B with Texeira available but if we dont get Tex, A-rod to 1B will keep him at his best longer and there is value in that.
