Mark Teixeira
Of all the offensive players available this offseason, Tex is clearly the class of the bunch. He can hit and he plays a great firstbase. Adding him to the the Yankees lineup would easily replace Giambi and upgrade the defense at the sametime.
But, there is an inherent problem with signing Mark, you plug up first for the forseeable future. Heading into 2009 the Yankees have a logjam of players who have positional questions hanging over them. Will Posada be able to catch regularly? Will Matsui be able to do anything except DH? And longer term, they will need to find a position for Derek Jeter soon.
On the other side, both Damon and Matsui enter the last year of their deals in 2009, which means in 2010 Posada could be a fulltime DH if needed. That makes signing Teixeria doable, but there is one more factor to consider, his agent. Boras is going to try and get a big deal for his player and it is important to remember that Mark will be 29 next season. Signing him for more than six years is going to create problems down the road. I just don't think Boras will settle for that, but if for some reason he does, the Yankees should and probably will be the high bidder.

I've raised this point several times and no one seems to want to address it. Alex Rodriguez has 9 years left on his contract. There is no way he is going to be able to play 3rd base for 9 more yrs. He will start to show that wear and tear at the plate well before then. He is going to HAVE to be moved to 1B. It strikes me as completely logical to move Jeter to 3rd base and Arod to 1B. Sign Furcal, Cabrera, whoever for SS. You can live with Jeters bat at third long term (you won't anywhere else), he'll probably benefit a bit physically (SS is tougher on the body).
I think that you have Damon/Matsui/Posada at DH next year is a valid concern but not the top priority. Matsui and Damon are in their last years of their deals and moveable.
I'm not optimistic about Posada. If Posada only plays 60 games behind the plate and DH's 70-80 games a season for the final few years of his deal, it will be more than I thought we'd get out of him. The most likely thing for Posada is that he can't make the grade defensively at C and he doesn't hit enough to be a + bat at DH. Depending on how bad it is, I expect him and the Yankees to have to work out an injury settlement.

I think we have talked about it before, haven't we?
Anyway, I don't think you can move Matsui this offseason, Damon perhaps, but not Matsui coming of an injury. And yes, A-Rod will need to move before his deal ends, but I am assuming that will probably be to DH. I think moving Jeter to 3B is the wrong way to go because A-Rod is a better glove than Jeter. A-Rod in left is an interesting idea down the road, but for the next couple of years I think he can stay at third.

"Old timers" like Posada and Jeter can always move (not next year, but eventually) to a corner outfield position or to DH. First base is an important position, and Texeira is clearly the best position player in the draft.
If you sign him, and drop Abreu and Giambi, you save money, improve the team, and get younger. Bat Texeira third and Matsui fifth and you've surrounded ARod with some good impact hitters.

A-rod to LF is definitely a possibility. I just think, given the investment in him for the length of time, getting him off of 3rd as soon as possible should be a priority.
There is no good answer for Posada and Jeter. Is Posada going to hit like he has in the past. I really doubt it. I'd expect .350 OBP with 15 HRs at best. That's barely passable at DH, 1B.
Posada in a corner OF spot? Delusional.

Tim- Why do you think he has to move off of third so soon is it because of a potential injury?
Posada in the corner is insanity as you said. I think you have to hope he can catch 80+ games and then shuttle him to DH/1B and hope his bat holds up. But make no mistake, Posada has the potential to be a huge albatross around the Yankees' necks for the next three years. If he can't hit anymore they are in big trouble.
