Interview With Girardi
YES just played this interview with Girardi about moving Joba to the pen.
Girardi- I think if you looked at his numbers as a starter and compare him to other starters last year, you would say his numbers are pretty special. But, it's it's always heightened when you come in the eighth inning you're only going to throw one inning. I loved what he did in both roles last year and that's something we've talked about we debated over and over. Threw a pretty good game against Boston. Threw a pretty good game against Kansas City. I mean he has thrown some pretty good games for us he hasn't necessarily been rewarded with wins but he's thrown pretty well. And it's hard to have that same presence outworldly as a starter because i think you would wear yourself out. You can have it inside of you. But you know this is something we talked about doing and we think he has top of the end rotation stuff and this is something he is probably going to grow and learn.
Question- Has his velocity been where you want it to be and if not will that improve?
Girardi- I think against Boston it was the best it had been and we've talked about how power pitchers take a little but more time than other guys sometimes and i think he was consistently 93 and i think it will continue to improve as the season goes on
Question- Can you envision any scenario this year in which he goes back to the bullpen?
Girardi- Well thats not something i necessarily want to get into. I mean we have five starters now and we will stick with those five starters. You see what situation you have as the season goes on but right now we are sticking with those starters.
I don't know if that will put the rumors to rest, but I hope so. Joba has 15 career starts with a 2.99 ERA. If he kept that up he would win multiple Cy Youngs. Let's see him start a lot more games this year and then decide where he should end up, the bullpen can be a fallback option and too many starters would be a wonderful problem to have.
Comments
We'll see what we see when we see it Peter. Girardi sort of weasled around that last answer.
Joba is playing with the corners tonight and, admittedly, not getting some calls. He's also obviously missing his spots and, as a result, flirting with big problems. I would LOVE to be wrong about this as great starters are much harder to come by than decent bullpen arms - all I know is what I see. C'mon Joba, make me out my words.
And Posada steals a base ??? First Molina lays down a bunt, then slams one and now Posada steals second. Whew !!!

Mitchell- How did I know you would be the first one to comment on that post ;-) You've got the "under" and I have the "over" either way, I hope we meet up at a parade this October/November.

Guess you could say I'm a little 'over focused' on the Joba question. LOL
He's got a 6 run cushion now, let's see if he calms down enuf to throw strikes - esp. first pitch strikes.
And yeah, that parade would be really sweet !!

BL? Getting roast beef at the Carnegie is like ordering fish at Peter Luger's ;-)
Sounds like a plan Peter !

ok, help me out Mitchell, what would you order?
Peter - just be careful down at Congress and State, you may run into any number of parades there, what with the Bruins likely the favorite to meet the Wings in the finals and with the Sox and Patriots in the hunt. Too bad KG had to go down, guess all 4 running for titles would be too greedy.

At Carnegie? First cut corned beef, seedless rye, light on the mustard and a Dr. Brown's soda - CelRay if they can still get it. Full sour, not half sour pickle, maybe some cole slaw. Or maybe pastrami if the corned beef looks a little dry. If we're meeting in Boston to celebrate the Giants crushing the Pats? Then I'd suggest Legal's as Bahstonians can't comprehend a deli.

They still have Cel-Ray and I would ditto that order, but with more mustard and a half sour. It's funny how you mention all 4 teams winning titles BL. I remember living in Boston and the town being so desperate for a parade that they had one when Bourque won the Cup- with Colorado!

You guys made me nostalgic with all this food talk. I think I might have an egg cream today.

ok, I buy into it if you go with the Pastrami, I've had that at carnegie.
As for Legal, please, can do so much better than that, although a Legal opened here in Atlanta and it is the best I can get down here...bucket of steamers followed by the lobster roll with coleslaw and fries.
Peter - I was going to try to make an analogy to Patrick Ewing, as a NY player that never won anything, but I don't honestly think he was as beloved in NY as Bourque was in Boston. Bourque was Yaz, Bourque was Bird (without the titles). It was over the top but clearly the franchise gave him that chance to get a title out of respect.

OK, then the No Name (that still down there? it's been a while for me) or we can meet in the North End for great veal.

now you are talking, yes noname is still there, down by the Seaport Hotel. I went there a couple years ago, seems to have changed a bit though or my perception changed. I remember as a kid the servings were GIGANTIC mounds of fried everything. Couple years ago it was just big servings. Of course I am bigger now too.
The North End, now you have my attention.

The funny thing about the North End is that I always know which restaurant I go to, how to get there, sneaky places to park - but I *never* remember the darn name of the place !?!
And Ewing was always considered the "great so what" when I lived/worked in NYC. Patrick and the Knicks were like the Mets - perpetual disappointments.

the one place I prefer above all others in the North End is the same for me, I have no idea what it is called, have to ask my friends that still live in the area if I need to know the name to give someone.

North End is The Daily Catch for me. Hole in the wall, family style, but oh the pastas and seafood. There is also a place on Hanover I believe which I can't remember the name of. Sadly, with 93 now underground, I would probably get lost.
Ewing wasn't loved in NYC and I think it was because when he was in college he went to Georgetown and they used to have wars with St. John's and Chris Mullin. Mullin would be the guy BL, he was beloved in New York and even now people get very excited to hear he might be joining the Knicks front office.
