« A Penny Saved | Main | The Move The Yankees Should Make »

Thank You!

The Yankees have amended the "Joba Rules" in a very smart way.  Joba will get the ball every fifth day, but he will be limited in the innings he throws.  His last start will be around six innings so he would be ready to go at full strength if the Yankees make the playoffs.

I think this is a much better plan that the "your next start will be revealed to you later" plan.  Joba is trying to establish himself in this league and he doesn't need the distraction of wondering when he is getting the ball next.  Now he knows and I think that will help him.

The interesting thing to watch will be how the Yankees limit Joba over the next month.  He has pitched 130 innings so far and if they want to keep him at 160 for the season we can take a pretty good guess and it looks something like this:

August 30th- 2 Innings

September 4th- 2 Innings

September 9th- 2 Innings

September 15th- 2 Innings

September 21st- 3 Innings

September 27th- 3 Innings

October 3rd- 6 Innings

You would have to assume as things stand that means Chad Gaudin gets the ball after Joba but that could change too.  Now the only question that remains is how will Joba perform under the new rules?

Is it REALLY better to go 2 or 3 innings per outing to stay under a totally ARBITRARY innings limit?

At some point the ridiculousness of it all has to shine through, right?

I missed the magic scroll that said 160 is the perfect amount...what if the "perfect" amount for this year for Joba is 157? Oh my God! We've gone over! What ever shall we do?

As you can tell I am mocking the way the Yankees and for that matter, baseball teams in general handle young pitchers.

I don't buy into specific innings count/pitch count theories.

If 160 is something that was decided by Yankee management that was always intended, then fine, they blew it if they are gonna use him for 2 or 3 innings an outing.

They should have paced him long ago to allow for normal use later in the season.

Agree to disagree but how does 2 inning outings progress Joba as a pitcher, especially if you are counting on him as a starter for the future?

Those numbers look like Joba The Starting Reliever and will create havoc with the bullpen. Not a good solution. And telling a young kid that he's starting every 7 or 8 days, should have been fine for anyone - except a whiner like Joba. If he were shifting back to the pen, OK, those numbers might seem reasonable, but starting a game just to get lifted in the 3rd? I don't see the benefit to it, sorry.

I'm putting this mess on Cashman and Girardi.

Curious to see which September callups, if any, get assigned the task of filling in the missing Joba innings.

the amazing thing is...that Mitchell and I agree on something :)

LOL. Yeah, but it's not surprising BL - great minds think alike - except when it comes to team loyalties ;-).

They are going to "compress" the kid with a short pitch count limit - or whatever word works as the opposite of "stretching" him out. If they really want to limit him, then swap Hughes for Joba and give Phil some innings cause he really needs them, like Peter pointed out some time back. Not going to happen, I know. But still, this new plan seems very wrong to me.

The kid came back after the AS break and was fabulous and he strongly credits the down time for his rejuvenation. Then they give him the same down time during the season after he struggles ... and he complains, after his struggles continue, that it (the down time) was wrong for him. Yeah, I know and you weren't throwing at Youk's head either.

Wellllllllllllllll, which one is it Joba? Does rest work for you or no?

you gotta hope now that in his 2 or 3 innings he at least will throw around 90 pitches so he doesn't compress...lol

Ugh ... perish the thought!
