The Yankees Didn't Blink
Interesting tweet from Ken Davidoff saying that Damon came back to the Yankees and asked for two-years/$11 million per. He said in an earlier tweet that the Yankees offered two-years/$14 million- a number which Damon rejected.
I am pretty surprised that it came down to a total of $6 million. That's a pretty small figure and shows you that the Yankees really were ready to move on unless Damon met their terms.

so its still basically abreu's deal that is the centerpoint: 2 @ 9 per annum.

That is what he is worth. It's too bad they couldn't come to some kind of an arrangement.

Actually it's less than Abreu's deal. Damon miss read the market as well as Boras. It feels great to see the demon seed (Boras) with egg on his face. Yankees were told not to call about Damon unless it was
was 4 yrs 13mm per .For them to come crawling back for less than that, and being too late,is PRICELESS!!

gfd well said but instead of egg on his face i would have used another word..like something you step on crossing the street..

As of 9 PM ET on Saturday, still no definite news on Johnson or Damon - wonder if Damon is going to call Cashman at the 11th hour and say "nine per gets it done, Brian". Sorta like A-Rod talking directly to Hank.
Hmmmm ...

Interesting theory, Mitchell, but don't you think it's just because Johnson has a physical (reportedly) scheduled for Monday?

Yep, it's just a theory, a wild one at that - but we've all seen crazy things happen. I keep thinking back to the time when Boras pulled the A-Rod stunt, Hank replies, "We're done with A-Rod", Alex flies to Tampa, falls on his sword and everyone kisses and forgives.
I'd give Damon about a 1% chance of being a Yankee in 2010, but hey, ya never know.

Damon is going to have a hard time making more than Matsui's one year contract, given that the big spenders would rather go with Bay or Holliday.
So, my fantasy is he fires Boras and comes back to a 2 year deal at $7 million per year. Think of the lineup:
Jeter SS
Damon LF
Tex 1B
A Rod 3B
Posada C
Granderson CF
Swisher RF
Johnson DH
Cano 2B

A .320 hitter in the ninth spot would be amazing Corey.

How about this.... trade swisher and johnson thats about 14 mil,... sign damon at 8mil, holliday for 15mil, a boras package deal thats 23mil, so we go for nine 9mil that still keeps us under 200mil i think..

jeter ,damon, tex, arod ,holliday. grandy, posada, cano melky

I suspect that the $ saved on Damon by going with Johnson is going to be spent on guys like Wang and another arm, possibly a young Cuban fireballer. :-D

Or a Puerto Rican pitcher from the Braves who already knows what it's like to pitch for the Yankees? If that's true then it's deja vu all over again and poses the question: for whom?

The Vasquez trade may grow on me in time, but Im not in love with it right now.
If the Braves pick up a good amount of his salary so we can pursue a bat, that might help.

Its unclear right now is Arodys Vizcaino is part of the package sent to Atlanta. If he isnt, I like the trade. If he is, ...not so much.

Now all the yanks have to do is trade one of our cheaper players for a 12 million dollar pitcher who already started for us, had an ERA of 5 and did terribly in the postseason. Oh wait... done and done!

So now we have some details of the players and the dollars the Yankees are sending to the Braves in order to get Javier.
Melky? When he was hitting, I enjoyed watching him, problem was he sometimes wasn't hitting. I will surely miss that cannon of an arm though. Definitely. And I will miss the "Got Melk" t-shirts also.
One thing I could never figure out is what caused Javier to implode the way he did in 2004? I hear it wasn't an injury, just mechanics. I'm also concerned that his pitching numbers bounce all over the place from year to year. But I suppose he's going to be able to eat some innings at the back end of the rotation - I hope.
The questions are now: who plays LF (Gardner?) and which of the two wunderkinds goes back to the pen (Joba?)? Do we pickup Nady?

damon comes back at 9 mil.which leaves us with a terrible defense again. hated to give up dunn..i don't get sending them $s they should have sent us $s????? Now that melky and abreu are gone cano will have a more focused year..

Damon no longer has a role to play from what I can see BWP. He's a bat, not an OFer.

You are right Mitchell.. but do we go with the guy from wash , we are now stuck with him on the 25 man roster, gardner can be at AAA. what is the move or its pat??
Posted by: bornwithpinstripes | December 24, 2009 12:55 AM |
I don't know what Cashman's going to do. I can't see him going for a big dollar, long term OFer at this point. He's proably waiting to see what sort of bargains there are in July or as a FA at season's end (think Carl Crawford).
And Gardner is a decent OFer relative to some of the low payscale guys that are still available. I think this is one situation where we just have to wait it out, BWP.
