Hairston Gone
Jerry Hairston just signed a one-year/$2.15 million deal with the Padres. It's not that shocking that the Yankees let him go, he just doesn't have the bat to play the outfield and Ramiro Pena can do almost exactly the same things Hairston does.
His signing means that of the seven free agents the Yankees had at the end of 2009, four have found homes. Hinske (Atl), Matsui (Ana) and Hairston (SD) all went elsewhere with Pettitte coming back to NY. It leaves Nady, Damon and Molina still looking for a team to play on next year and we are less than a month from pitchers and catchers.
Comments
Peter, if Cashman is being honest and is only willing to spend $2MM for a LFer, then Damon is certainly out. Maybe it really will be Gardy, Grandy and Swisher with Hoffman on standby.
Would surely be nice if someone like Miranda could develop into a decent OFer cause the 1B postion is a little crowded on this team. Kid has some decent power in his bat.

Mitchell- I don't get what they are doing with Miranda. As you said, the position is pretty covered and it seems a waste to put him back in AAA. I wonder if they will try and trade him during spring training.
BL- I can certainly try, but which date to use Yankees (2/17) or Red Sox (2/19)?

If the Yanks sign Nady, then there's no need for Hairston. Nady has some good right-handed power and would be perfect, so long as he's fully recovered from his injuries.
You could rest Nady against nasty righties and play Gardner; and you could rest Granderson against nasty lefties and play Gardner. Gardner also is a defensive replacement. He'll get plenty of innings that way.
Lineup:
Jeter SS
Johnson DH
Texeira 1B
A Rod 3B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Nady LF
Granderson CF
Awesome having 3 guys with 25+ homer power at bottom of order.

Corey- I agree with Nady, I think he is the perfect fit at this point. He can play both corners and fill in at first if needed. I saw this today http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/121409-Latest-MLB-buzz so it sounds like he will be ready to go in March.

Nady worries me - two TJ surgeries for a non pitcher makes me wonder just how brittle he really is. Also, if the budget is really $2MM, would Boras let Nady return for that figure? My guess is that some team will offer up a bigger number than 2 mill for him and he'll be off the market also.

BL- My pleasure and please speak up if you have any other suggestions. You are one of the reasons this site is fun for me, so I am always interested in your feedback.
Mitchell- Yup, definitely a concern, but I think that may work in the Yankees' favor by lowering his price. I imagine they will have to offer him some incentives, but I bet they could get him for a base of $2 million and incentives that would let him double or triple that amount. Now, does the budget have room for that? I don't know the answer to that part.

Mitchell- We have had 5 phone calls urging us to get out and vote today. The last one said turnout in our area was low. No kidding I told them, do you know you are calling Brooklyn, NY. They hung up.

LOL. Yep, I can relate to that Peter. It WAS pretty spooky when this site had Martha's smiling face staring at me in the upper right corner of your page. I blame it all on Andy, of course. :-)
By the way, when I get "get out the vote" calls like that, I usually tell them I've already voted and "not too worry" about it. When they ask for whom, my standard response is, "Why - for Elmer, of course". At this point, if they're silly enough to continue the conversation by asking, "Who's Elmer" - that's when I tell them, " Elmew Fudd, hehehe, you silly wabbit, who else"? Reactions vary from giggles to quick hangups. Hey, I'm entitled to some fun too, ya know?
28 days, just 28 days ... and, by the way, I like the idea of Pro Bowl coming before the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl should be the standard way to close out the season.

Mitchell- Definitely Andy's fault. Most things can be blamed on him including the old way they played the Pro Bowl. I agree, this is much better and it also makes sense they moved it our of Hawaii.
I like your phone approach. Reminds me of a friend who always told callers asking for money that he just needed to consult the voices in his head about what he should do and he would be right back....

I suspect the lineup will look more like this:
Jeter SS
Johnson DH
Texeira 1B
A Rod 3B
Granderson CF
Posada C
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Gardner LF
Cashman seems to want to see who he has in Gardner before replacing him. His speed is a real weapon if he can keep the ball on the ground. Plus, they just traded for Granderson, no way he hits at the bottom of the order with 30+ HR power. He will take Matsui's spot (ok, maybe not against left handers right off the bat!).
