Last Chance

Sorry I haven't posted much recently. A vision issue kept me away, but I am on the mend and should be posting regularly the rest of the way. Tonight is the night that playoff rosters are sort of set. I say sort of, because there is a very important exemption. Basically, anyone on the 25-man roster or the DL is eligible for the postseason roster. But teams can also substitute for players on the DL with anyone in the organization, provided they play the same position. So the Yankees could make very good use of Nick Johnson's DH tag and add any hitter in the organization if they wanted to. They will also probably have the ability to add a pitcher because it seems unlikely that Alfredo Aceves will make it back as a playoff-caliber pitcher. It is going to be a very interesting September for the Yankees. They have a comfortable hold on a playoff spot, but the division is going to be a dogfight. Can they outlast Tampa with a dysfunctional starting rotation? The roster expansion comes at a great time because if they can find another bullpen arm or two they can really lessen the burden on the rotation. Albe will be a part of that and I expect Romulo Sanchez is going to be appearing in the Bronx soon. 31 games to go, fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

The Yanks have a lot of games left with Tampa, Boston, and Toronto -- none of whom they have played particularly well. Given their lousy pitching, I don't think a playoff spot is assured unless Boston really goes in the tank.

I'd like to see Burnett take the bullpen "cure" that seems to have worked for Hughes and Vazquez. That would mean putting Vazquez back in the rotation.

Unless Pettite can come back and Hughes can straighten himself out, I don't see this team mounting much of a playoff run.

Bumpy ride? At least youz guys have a car...Sox fans have been pushing our jalopy all season...first it was just outa gas (Cameron), then it had no oil (Ellsbury), then one of the tires blew (Martinez), then the spare tire blew (Varitek), then the top wouldn't go back up (Pedroia), then the stable frame cracked (Youk), then we finally got the top back up and after two lousy games it ripped apart again (Pedroia).

This season has been nothing but a continuous monsoon...geesh.

post made from work earlier today

Glad to hear you're on the mend. Hope there won't be any long-term issues.

My seat belt has been fastened for almost a month now. My knuckles are white, too, especially when Burnett takes the hill . . .

Definitely going to be a grind to the finish, but I cant think of many things better on TV (or in person) than September/October baseball. Heres hoping the 3 long men in the pen continue to prove a worthy stop-gap solution while AJ and Andy are on vacation.

Yep, Albe *had* to be called up, to rest someone else's arm and to see if he's ready, again, to facing MLB players. And a 3rd catcher makes sense also. I wouldn't have guessed that Golson would come up - like you, Peter, I thought it would be another arm.

And, of ocurse, tonight's AJ game will be televised on ESPN. I guess the major networks like to frustrate Yankees fans nationwide. :-)
